Big Bauhaus stage

In the spotlight: the opening festival

Luis Alberto Rodriguez
Uraufführung von Richard Siegal. Mit Sandra Hüller und Alva Noto

On the opening evening jazz pianist and composer Michael Wollny presents his concert creation „Bau.Haus.Klang. Harmony“, which he specially devised for the festival and which is devoted to musical experiments at the Bauhaus. Between improvisation and composition and together with his colleagues Emile Parisien, Wolfgang Heisig, Leafcutter John und Max Stadtfeld he explores the most diverse sound spaces and scenarios, engaging both with the Bauhaus materials wood, glass, metal, clay, stone and fabric as well as the untamed dance music of the legendary Bauhaus band. In an interview with Oliver Uschmann, Michael Wollny talks about the creative process of the music for 100 years bauhaus, the freedom of jazz and the essence of truly inspired art.

Txtorrent will celebrate its première on 20th January. Together with the actress Sandra Hüller and the sound artist Alva Noto, Richard Siegal explores how the Bauhaus artists engaged with language – both on stage and in reality. The three exceptional artists have been inspired by Oskar Schlemmer’s ever-relevant self-imposed stipulation to approach words and language 'non-literarily', “i.e. in its primary state, as a happening, as if it were being heard for the first time..." Richard Siegal discusses his work on the two premières in an interview with Carmen Kovacs.

Language and meaning are also the central theme of Samuel Beckett’s play “Krapp’s Last Tape”. Robert Wilson, one of the world’s leading theatre directors has already shown it in numerous countries worldwide and will show it for the first time in Germany during the opening festival. “Krapp’s Last Tape (...) provides a unique opportunity for his performing talent, being a blend of his signature, highly detailed, and rigorous integration of movement, lighting and sound (…) A structure that leaves a great deal of freedom for the spontaneity of response that makes his live performance so exciting.” (Sue Jane Stoker. On Robert Wilson)
